Position Objective:

The Lead Design Engineer provides technical leadership to the Design Engineering team while actively contributing to engineering project work. This role oversees a team of Design Engineers, assigns and monitors workload, and ensures high-quality and timely deliverables. In addition to leading others, the Lead Design Engineer is responsible for executing their own project assignments and maintaining strong ownership of individual design tasks. The role partners closely with the Design Engineering Manager on resource planning, team development, and performance management, including conducting annual reviews for direct reports.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct daily activities and assign tasks based on team skills, project needs, and available resources.
  • Track progress, provide coaching, and ensure high‑quality engineering outputs.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews and support ongoing employee development and succession planning.
  • Manage individual engineering assignments while balancing leadership responsibilities.
  • Uphold engineering rigor, quality standards, and documentation requirements.
  • Execute direction from the Design Engineering Manager and appropriately delegate within the team.
  • Provide input on resource allocation, workload balancing, and team capabilities.
  • Communicate project and team status, risks, and improvement opportunities regularly.
  • Offer technical guidance and subject‑matter expertise to the engineering team.
  • Support resolution of complex design challenges and lead design reviews and validation activities.
  • Ensure all designs meet company standards, regulatory requirements, and manufacturability expectations.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing, Quality, Program Management, Supply Chain, and other partners throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Address technical issues encountered during prototyping, testing, or production.
  • Advocate and promote for process, tooling, or workflow improvements within the engineering function.
  • Support deployment of new standards, templates, methodologies, or technologies.
  • Participate in root-cause analysis and corrective action for design-related issues.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering field.
  • 5+ years of experience in product design or engineering.
  • Proficiency with CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
  • Experience in technical leadership or mentoring roles.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles, GD&T, and manufacturing processes.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience supervising or mentoring engineers.
  • Exposure to manufacturing, industrial equipment, or production environments.
  • Experience working with PLM/PDM systems (e.g., Windchill, Teamcenter).
  • Knowledge of relevant regulatory or industry-specific standards.
